ENERGY

The UK government has a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 80% from 1990 levels by 2050. 27% of these currently come from our homes.

A group of about a dozen local residents have got together to work towards reducing those sooty carbon emissions and making Montpelier’s homes more energy efficient. We are a splinter group of Transition Montpelier and are calling ourselves TMEG. The Transition Montpelier Energy Group.

In March five of us attended an Energy Saving Trust training session run by the Centre for Sustainable Energy. We learnt how to carry out audits of peoples’ homes, identify ways to help them save energy such as refurbishing their sash windows or installing secondary glazing. We can also help people to access grants for improvements.

Because who we buy our electricity from makes a difference. We have linked with Good Energy (100% renewable energy suppliers) who will give Transition Montpelier £20 for every person who signs up through their affiliate scheme.

You may wish to visit www.goodenergy.co.uk to find out more and sign up quoting the affiliate code GE414. You can also switch by phone 0845 465 1640 mentioning the same affiliate code.

Three of us visited the Malcolm X centre in April and carried out an audit and did a survey to assess potential for solar pv (photo-voltaic / electricity). We have been asked to come back and run some workshops on building energy awareness.

We are also proud to have been instrumental in the development of Bristol Green Doors, a weekend event (Sept 11-12th) of open homes showcasing a range of no-cost to high-cost measures that can reduce domestic energy consumption and promote low-carbon living. See www.bristolgreendoors.org

Project title: Montpelier Park Regeneration

Project description:

Montpelier Park is a community resource, and apart from the children’s play area, is currently in a state of neglect with considerable drug and sex litter problems.  We want to encourage more people to use the Park, so it feels safer.  We believe the best way to do this is to improve the visibility of all areas, and provide activities for a wide variety of people.

Montpelier residents are particularly passionate about sustainable development and environmental issues, and the future development of the Park should reflect the community’s priorities.  We are keen to see the current tarmac slope develop into a decent ballgames pitch with spectator seating, which could also be used for community market days.  Skateable areas are likely to be key, and we are exploring if we can connect the park to the local train station, encouraging both more people into the park, and more people onto public transport.  Montpelier is a Conservation Area, and the Park itself is a former church and churchyard with original (1845) walls, gate arches and trees.  Graffiti as an art (as opposed to ‘tagging’) is particularly celebrated in the area, and the park has informal graffiti walls allowing local artists to showcase their work.

Local residents have driven the project, and strive to ensure all have a voice in its outcome.  Following a major consultation exercise, a formal Community Proposal was drafted in August 2008 incorporating questionnaire results, creative discussions and strategic principles.  This was submitted to the Council in September 2008.  In February 2009, Bristol City Council agreed to initiate a formal project, and allocated an initial £47k from housing development funds.  A Parks Department public consultation is underway, work is due to start in March 2010, and we are currently investigating further funding opportunities to ensure the best possible design can be delivered.
