Street Orchards are go! Click here for a map of homes already signed up. Two clusters have formed, one around the middle of Ashley Road, and the other around Fairfield Road. We have ten free trees left; if your garden is in one of the two clusters, get in touch and you could be taking ownership of a stake in the Montpelier Street Orchard. There’s a variety of rootstocks on offer, so if you have a small space, we can hopefully provide a dwarf tree.
Even if you don’t want a tree yourself, you can help them get going by telling us where existing apple trees are, as planting them within 50m of other apples will give them the best chance of pollination. Do you have an apple tree in your garden? Does your neighbour? The type of apple doesn’t matter – we just need to get plugged into the bee routes!
If you’re interested in being part of a cluster, or know the address of an existing apple tree, please let us know in a comment below or by emailing urbangreening@transitionmontpelier.org.uk.
we have four apple trees in our garden at 24 Fairfield Road – one cox fan, one russet fan, one large old unidentifiable which produces good cider apples, and a late blossoming eater. Richie from Fairlawn Rd makes “Ashley Hill Cider” each year with some of the apples, but Pelier Mountain Cider sounds good to me…..
Thanks Stephen, much appreciated. There will be bees galore near you then!
