Thinking about drugs…

Is anyone else wondering if there’s a better way to deal with drink/drug misuse and its consequences in Montpelier?

Montpelier Park has more than its fair share of drug litter, and the police are trying to tackle dealing around the Health Centre, the Park and Ashley Road.  Montpelier residents seem to be affected in all sorts of ways, from burglaries and muggings to fund addictions, to feelings of unease caused by ‘hangers around’ and dog mess.

I’m not in any way saying ‘clear em all out’, but I don’t understand what is done to manage the range of problems associated with addiction.  And Montpelier seems to have a very high concentration of problems, disproportionate to its population.   I’m interested in finding out how all the various groups (GPs, shelters, drug support, police etc) work together to tackle things, and whether there’s anything else that could be done.  Is this of interest to you?  Any ideas where we could start to get a grip on things?

My question would be: is Montpelier a community that may understand and support more experimental approaches to substance abuse, where other areas would resist?
